Create a cluster

Goal

To create clusters that group products based on shared attributes, enabling structured navigation and drill-downs in the storefront. Clusters organize product variants (e.g., different colors and sizes of shoes) and optional add-ons (e.g., insurance or accessories) for a better shopping experience.

Prerequisites

Before creating a cluster, ensure you have:

  • An existing cluster definition that determines the product filters and drill-down structure
  • For guidance on creating cluster definitions, see Create cluster definitions

Step 1: Navigate to Clusters

  1. From the backoffice menu, select PIM > Products & Clusters.
  2. Click the New Cluster button in the top right corner.

Step 2: Select a Cluster Definition

  1. In the New Cluster dialog, select an existing cluster definition from the dropdown.
  2. The selected definition determines:
  • Available product filters for drill-down
  • Display types for each filter
  • Filter arrangement order

Step 3: Configure Cluster Details

  1. In the General tab, enter the following information:
  • Name: Provide a descriptive cluster name
  • SKU: Enter a unique identifier for the cluster
  • Short description: Brief overview for search results
  • Long description: Detailed information for product pages
  • Default language: Select the primary language
  • Category: Assign to relevant product category
  1. Configure additional settings as needed:
  • Hidden: Control visibility in catalog
  • Priority: Set display order
  • Metadata: Add SEO information

Step 4: Add Cluster Products

  1. Navigate to the Products tab.
  2. A default empty product is automatically created - click to edit it.
  3. To add more products, click New Product.
  4. For each product variant:
  • Fill in standard product fields (name, SKU, price, etc.)
  • Ensure all cluster definition filters have valid values
  • Configure product-specific attributes
  1. Click Save after each product.
  2. All variants appear in the cluster's product list.

For detailed product creation steps, see Create a product.

Step 5: Configure Cluster Options

  1. Navigate to the Options tab.
  2. Click Add Cluster Option to create optional add-ons.
  3. For each option group, provide:
  • Name: Clear option group name (e.g., "Extended Warranty")
  • Description: Detailed explanation of the option
  • Short Description: Brief summary for display
  • isRequired: Toggle if customers must select an option
  1. Click Save to create the option group.
  2. Open the option group and add specific products:
  • Click Add Product within the option
  • Create option products (e.g., "1-Year Warranty", "2-Year Warranty")
  • Configure pricing and attributes for each option

Step 6: Set Up Cross-selling (Optional)

  1. Navigate to the Storefront tab.
  2. Configure cross-selling relationships by category:
  • Accessories: Complementary products (e.g., shoe care kit)
  • Alternatives: Similar products from different brands
  • Related Products: Items frequently bought together
  • Options: Additional configurations
  • Parts: Replacement or spare parts
  1. Click Add Products for each category.
  2. Search and select relevant products.

Step 7: Save and Publish

  1. Click Save at the top right to store all cluster details.
  2. The cluster now appears in the Products & Clusters list.
  3. Verify the cluster by:
  • Checking all product variants are listed
  • Confirming options display correctly
  • Testing drill-down functionality matches the cluster definition

Best Practices

  • Consistent Naming: Use clear naming conventions across clusters, products and options
  • Complete Variants: Ensure all size/color/attribute combinations are created
  • Filter Values: Verify each product has values for all cluster definition filters
  • Option Organization: Group related options logically (e.g., warranties together, accessories together)
  • Testing: Preview the cluster on the front end to verify drill-down behavior
  • SEO Optimization: Complete metadata fields for better search visibility

Common Cluster Examples

Fashion Cluster

  • Products: Different sizes and colors of a shoe model
  • Options: Extended warranty, care products, matching accessories

Electronics Cluster

  • Products: Different storage/color variants of a device
  • Options: Cases, screen protectors, extended warranties

Furniture Cluster

  • Products: Different sizes and finishes of a table
  • Options: Assembly service, protection plans, matching chairs

Important Notes

  • Clusters require a cluster definition before creation
  • All products in a cluster should share the same base characteristics
  • Filter values must match those defined in the cluster definition
  • Options can be required or optional based on business needs
  • Changes to the cluster definition may require updating existing products
